After 300 years, Shaolin Temple resumes a ritual
By Li Fangchao, China Daily, May 26, 2007
Beijing, China -- For the first time in 300 years, the renowned Shaolin Temple held a ritual on Thursday to initiate 600 believers into monkhood. So in 300 years Shaolin has not ordained a single Bhikshu (monk)? I can name at least one in our generation, Hai Deng Fa Shi- Dharma Master Hai Deng (Ocean Lamp). And up until the current Abbot took over, he was living example of a persecuted tradition. Now they dont persecute Buddhists because they CONTROL THEM.
On that same day, millions of monks and believers nationwide observed the Buddha bath festival which usually includes the washing of all statues of the Buddha. Or just one statue, as a remembrance to purify our own hearts.
The ceremony used to be considered an official ritual to recognize a believer into true monkhood. No its not. Its a ceremony for honoring our teacher, Sakyamuni Buddha.
Shi Yongxin, leader of Shaolin Temple and vice- president of the Buddhist Association of China, said that Buddhism in China has embarked on a "golden era" of development with a rapidly increasing number of believers. Just because people SAY they believe doesnt mean that they believe or practice, and more people does not signify a "golden era"; true practitioners, 1 or 1 million signify that the real teaching is flourishing.
Shi said the ritual was suspended for 300 years because the altar where the ritual was held was destroyed. The 26-meter-high three-storey alter was restored last year at the temple, located in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan Province. You dont need a special altar...you just need sincere intentions. Buddhism isnt concerned with outward appearances, its concerned with transforming your faults and bad habits.
The 600 Buddhists were selected out of 1,000 pious Buddhists nationwide. So the Buddhists were picked, like winning a lottery?
Shi said that only Buddhists who have passed a long-term inspection and are believed to have a "pre-destined lot" with Buddhism will be allowed to take the ritual and admitted by the temple. This ceremony is for everybody.
"Only Buddhists who practice Buddhism to a high level can be tonsured and allowed to take the ritual," Shi said. What level? 1st Dwelling? Srotaapanna maybe? (that will be funny to Buddhists)
The ritual will last 28 days during which time the 600 monks will listen to doctrines, learn Buddhism rituals and manners in the temple. 28 days to become a monk?...What kind of monk? Maybe a fake lottery monk.
Both Buddhism and Taoism seem to be attractting more believers. I wonder how much the government spends on advertising?
An international forum on the "Daode Jing", a classic of Taoism, was held last month and lured 300 Taoists from around the world who wanted to explore the true essence of the classic text. Yea, the more people the more clearer it will be...

Can you give us the link to the video you posted on the youtube?
Thanks.
BTW, your comment on the article is right on! However, I am glad that Buddhism is florishing again over there.
Why you dont come to do something here? HaHa...
Your experience in Shaolin Temple is as the same as what i experienced in another temple here in China. The biggest problem for us is that it is hard to know who is really a master so that if we have some problems we could ask for help: we dont have any chance to get in touch with the famous one and the one we met is probably trustless!
DID YOU KNOW ....?
Paragraph 3 & 8 - "Ceremony" here refers to the ordination.
Paragraph 7 - I'd like to become a nun too, but I don't think I'll ever be selected at Shaolin - you know why?
3rd last paragraph - So, how long you think it should take to become a monk, in ordination & rituals?
2nd last paragraph - isn't it better to have more buddhists than any other religion?
Response to "DID YOU KNOW....?"
First i would ask you why you would want to be a nun, and second whywould you choose Shaolin?
There is a text called the Bai Zhang which should be followed in terms of rituals and processes for complete ordination of a monk or nun. This is roughly 3 years of intense training under a master who deems you ready before ordination.
And no, its not better to have more Buddhists than any other religion. I would encourage people to think about Religion and study the major ones in DEPTH and then choose which one to practice, IF they wanted to.
hello, hui heng,
Our master had once taught us not to condemn others, no matter what they do is right or wrong. Do u remember the poem that Venerable Master Hsuan hua said ?
zhen ren zi ji cuo,
mo lun ta ren fei,
ta fei ji wo fei,
tong ti ming da bei.
( i dunno the English translation of this poem, these are the Chinese pronunciation of those words)
The Buddha, when questioned how to treat the sanghas who are not following the right path of cultivation, told his disciples to ignore them (as in not scolding them, not talking to them.... i remember there was four things that buddha said, but my memories are not that good). maybe u can double check with the sutras.
Hello Danielle,
Thanks for voicing your opinion.
But I STAND BY MY CRITICISM, and it is also MY opinion that you AND EVERYONE should be VERY careful when using The Masters Quotes and the Buddha's verses. Beings like that speak according to the conditions of thier listeners, and while i believe strongly that their wisdom is CORRECT, I feel that you have MIS-APPLIED that wisdom in this case.
First of all i did not in any way CONDEMN ANYONE in my rather comical rebuttal (my opinion). These people arent Sanghans (again in my opinon). And i feel it is my DUTY to take my little corner of the universe (and my daily life) to speak out in refutation of what i think is rediculous and harmful to what i passionately believe in.
I do not have the patience of the Master, or the wisdom, and i dont pretend to.
"Beings like that speak according to the conditions of thier listeners" i feel personally that this is correct. thanks for posting.
Wish i would have read this before last Sunday. I was up at CTTB with Tzu Chi medical outreach on Sunday. _/|\_ would have liked to buy you lunch Hui_Heng. :)

That would be nice, next time then.
